About

Scene from a visit to a rural school in Sabah, Malaysia

I am currently a Lecturer in Education at Keele University and the Book Review Editor for Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education. I also lead the Ethnography stream for Methods North West. Alongside friends, I work on the public scholarship project, CIE in Malaysia.

In 2022, I completed a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford, where I was a Clarendon Scholar and Doctoral Teaching Fellow. My DPhil research was supported by a fieldwork grant from the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE) and I was subsequently a FreshEd Fellow. I have also received academic training from Teachers College-Columbia University and UNSW Sydney.

In my previous professional life, I worked in the corporate philanthropy sector, focusing on education projects in my home country of Malaysia.

Within the field of comparative and international education, my research interests include education and inter/national development, rural education, postcolonial studies, informal education, education policy and the politics of knowledge production.

Methodologically, my work spans ethnographic, participatory and creative approaches.

The list of my associated publications can be accessed here. Feel free to get in touch if you would like to view my full CV.

From time to time, I also write creatively, mainly short stories in the genre of literary fiction and–more recently–personal essays. My latest collection, pictured here, is The Towering Petai Tree (Laras 99) and my creative writing portfolio can be accessed here.
