Development dreams in the heart of Kuala Lumpur

I am currently working on a book project from my DPhil, following the trail of the Malaysian developmental state’s use of science education to realise national aspirations of progress and modernity. I trace its effects on the contemporary lives of young people in the margins of such progress, from one location of the luar bandar (Malay for “rural”, lit. “outside of the city”). In tandem with these stories, the researcher’s own genealogy is taken as empirical material to consider the temporal effects of the state’s aspirations across different generations.

Part of this book project has been shared at Institut Kajian Etnik (Institute of Ethnic Studies, KITA) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

A collection of zines at Housmans Bookshop in London

Together with Olga Mun, I am currently working on a comparative project on Malay & Kazakh proverbs associated with sustainability. These proverbs serve as inspiration for developing a pedagogical activity on collaborative storying through zine-making. This project is funded by the Institute for Sustainable Futures, Keele University.

Read & share our first zine from the project, called Telaga Zher.

In light of my Flux Fellowship and recent publication in SVARA, I am currently interested in memory studies, particularly its intersection with postcolonial and development studies. I am collaborating with Zikri Rahman at Pusat Sejarah Rakyat (People’s History Centre) to document the generational legacies of development in Malaysia through a participatory sonic and oral history project called Suara (((Pembangunan))).

This project is funded by the Faculty Research Fund from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Keele University.
